The city of Swansea can trace its roots back thousands of years with evidence of Stone Age, Roman and Viking dwellings discovered. The city initially developed as a Viking trading post and even gets its name from Old Norse. Over the centuries Swansea grew in importance and by the time of the industrial revolution the city was the centre of the copper industry and earned the nickname ‘Copperopolis’. The city's recent regeneration has seen the arrival of a number of great shopping and leisure brands, while stunning marinas are transforming the former docks.
Aside from all the delights that Swansea itself has to offer, the surrounding area is abundant with beautiful countryside and some of the finest coastline in the UK. The Gower Peninsular, just a short drive from Swansea, is a 19 mile stretch of stunning coastline designated an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ and is a haven for the lovers of the great outdoors.
Swansea has a growing reputation for sport with a Premier League football team and a Rugby Union team who regularly contest the Heineken Cup. The city also has a bowls stadium which plays host to the World Indoor Championships. There are plenty of local clubs across the city playing a whole range of sports with something on offer to suit all tastes and abilities.
Road and rail links in the city are excellent with the M4 & A48 crossing Swansea, and connecting the city to the likes of Port Talbot, Bridgend, Cardiff, Bristol and London. Swansea train station provides regular links to a number of Welsh towns, Cardiff, Shrewsbury, Newport and London Paddington. Swansea Marina holds berths for 410 leisure boats while new marinas and berths are being constructed along the city's water front
