Local information for Lyneham, Wiltshire, SN15

The area has always been agricultural, with farms scattered around the hamlet responsible for working the land. In earlier times the land had belonged to the priory at Bradenstoke-Cum-Clack, on the north edge of the area, and was a centre for the growing of flax.  Indeed, the name of the village of Lyneham comes from this crop; it means Linen Ham, the place where flax is grown.

In the first part of the 20th century most of the village population worked in local pursuits such as agriculture or the sawmills, some went to work for the Great Western Railway in Swindon, and others went down to Calne to work for the Harris bacon factory.  However, more recently Lyneham has been associated with the Royal Air Force. Spread across 1800 acres, RAF Lyneham has been the home of United Kingdom military air transport operations since March 1943 and is one of the largest and busiest operational stations in the RAF.  However, 2012 is expected to see the closure of RAF Lyneham and the relocation of assets to RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

Travel a short distance from Lyneham and you will find some of the most breathtaking scenery to be found in England. Stunning views, countless things to do and experience, all add up to an amazing range of opportunities in the fantastic county of Wiltshire.

There are some 4000 miles of pathways including the famous Ridgeway Walk as well as the Kennet and Avon Canal. The Wansdyke Path from Marlborough to Morgan’s Hill and the Tan Hill Way also offer some beautiful and remote walks.

Just north of Lyneham, The Cotswold Water Park provides facilities for sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, power boating and angling while the local area also boasts 11 golf courses, riding stables and hang gliding schools.

Other notable places to visit are Avebury and Stonehenge, the city of Bath, Longleat House and Safari Park and the Great Western Railway Museum in Swindon.
