Aberdare is an industrial town in Rhondda Cynon Taff situated at the confluence of the River Dar and Cynon. From being, at the beginning of the 19th Century, a mere village in an agricultural district, the place grew rapidly in population owing to the abundance of its coal and iron ore, and the population of the whole parish increased tenfold during the first half of the 19th century.
The economy of the town was dominated by the coal mining industry and the reputation of Aberdare's product launched a huge international export market. In common with the rest of the South Wales coalfield Aberdare's coal industry commenced a long decline after World War I.
Today Aberdare is a busy shoppers town which combines an eventful history with a grand scenic setting and an unusual claim to fame as the cradle of the British Film Industry.
So much to see and so much to do in Rhondda Cynon Taff whether you are looking for walking and hiking, cycling, great views and countryside or, you are looking for culture, theaters, restaurants and museums there is always a 'Croseo' waiting for you here.
Are you new to the area? If you would like to know more about Aberdare,
