Local information for Swindon, Wiltshire, SN2 5AB

Swindon, is a lively city in the heart of Wiltshire.
Boasting an attractive pedestrianised high street forged from the Old Town, a wide range of independent shops, eateries and boutiques, Swindon blends the finest in modern living with a sense of history.

History
Swindon began as a small ‘barter trade’ market town until 1840 when the arrival of Brunel’s ‘Great Western Railway’ transformed the town socially and economically, the rail industry subsequently becoming a major factor in the growth of Swindon as a regional commercial centre.

Shopping
Swindon’s town centre offers a fantastic variety of shops including the Orbital Shopping Park with a range of shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. The Old Town area offers traditional shopping and is home to several long established family businesses, whilst the ‘Brunel centre’ is home to over 100 stores, restaurants and cafes as well as most of the reputable high street brands. Set in the historic railway works buildings and lying just 15 minutes walk from the town centre lies the ‘Swindon Designer
Outlet‘. Mixing a sense of history with 21st century shopping the centre offers a wealth of clothes, home furnishings and gifts.

Entertainment

The award winning Steam Museum and the ‘Swindon and Cricklade Railway’ trace and celebrate the city's history whilst historic Lydiard Park and the picturesque Town Gardens are keen reminders that two thirds of the borough is either rural or parkland.

Nearby
Located on the edge of the Cotswolds and the rolling Wiltshire countryside, Swindon makes an ideal base for exploring an enormous variety of sporting, historical and family attractions.

Swindon is within easy reach of the famous Uffington chalk horse as well as walkers paradise ‘The Ridgeway’, whilst the Cotswold Wildlife Park offers an animal adventure set in over 160 acres of beautiful parkland.
