Local information for Trowbridge, Wiltshire, BA14 7WL

The county of Wiltshire comprises a wealth of stunning natural scenery and unspoilt landscape, along with a colourful and rich heritage.

    Trowbridge

Trowbridge sits in the west of the county just to the south of the Kennet and Avon canal - which once played an important part in the development of the town as it allowed coal to be transported from the Somerset Coalfield.  From the 13th century onwards Trowbridge developed a clothing industry and became increasingly industrialised from the 17th century - at one point rivaling the key Northern industrial towns of the time. However, the wool industry declined from the late 19th century and was supplemented by other industries including bedding, food production and brewing – notably with Ushers of Trowbridge.  The last mill, Salter’s Home Mill, closed in 1982 and is now home to the (free!) Trowbridge Museum. Other old buildings associated with the textile industry can still be seen and there are Conservation Areas including fine Georgian and Victorian properties.

    Local Amenities

Trowbridge is a compact centre with the focus for shops being the ancient Fore Street; while the more modern Shires and Castle Place shopping centres provide a wide variety of typical outlets.  The Civic Centre, a conference and entertainment venue, is next to the Town Park, and there is an all year round programme of cultural arts and entertainment events,
including sports and leisure opportunities, and festivals – notably the Village Pump Festival.

    Local Area

Trowbridge is conveniently located for a number of cycling or walking routes, as well as being situated on an extensive canal network and there numerous places of interest to visit in the surrounding areas, including Iford Manor, Farleigh Hungerford Castle and Corsham Court – to name just three. In addition, the famous Longleat Safari & Adventure Park is less than a 30-minute drive.

    Transport Links

Persimmon@Castle Mead combines beautiful countryside, a bustling town with an interesting heritage and excellent positioning for superb road and rail links. Easy motorway access via the M4 to the north and M27 to the south leads to major cities including Bristol, Southampton and London.
