Local information for Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, KA3 1TE

Kilmarnock is a busy, popular commuter town in East Ayrshire, conveniently located in attractive countryside close to the Clyde coast.

Situated on Kilmarnock Water and with the River Irvine running through its eastern part, the town offers a pleasant location with plenty of amenities.

Kilmarnock lies at the meeting point of the A77, A71 and A76 main roads, linking it with Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dumfries and making it an excellent base for commuting. There is a local rail station, regular bus services and Prestwick airport is just 10 miles away.

The town itself is characterised by a bustling centre with pedestrianised shopping streets and a number of attractive buildings. There is a good range of shops and a variety of cafes and restaurants.

You’ll find some excellent leisure facilities including the Galleon Centre boasting a 25m pool, ice rink, squash courts, gym and sports halls, a local theatre and the Dick Institute encompassing art galleries and museums.

Kilmarnock has a good range of schools and a college of further education and keeping the children entertained is easy with a wide range of facilities close by.

For outdoor sports and activities there are two local golf courses and a good network of walks and cycle routes. The 30 acre Kay Park has a lake and play park while at Dean Castle you’ll find an extensive country park, riding centre and visitor attractions.

The lovely Irvine Valley has many interesting villages and features and it’s just a quick hop to reach the beautiful sandy beaches in Irvine Bay. Close proximity to Irvine means you can easily take advantage of some excellent leisure amenities including the Magnum Centre, one of Scotland’s largest, purpose built leisure centres, shopping in the modern Rivergate complex or enjoy a pleasant meander through Irvine’s award winning, regenerated harbourside.
