History

Calne has a rich heritage dating back to Anglo Saxon times when its wool mills and subsequent weaving industry brought the town its initial wealth. Calne later became a centre for curing pork due to pigs reared in Ireland being landed at Bristol and herded to London via the town, an industry that contributed to the town becoming a thriving centre in the region.  Shopping in Calne centre hosts all the expected high street stores whilst still possessing charming reminders of its market past. The City of Bath, situated to the west of the town, offers an enormous variety of shopping experiences; from the boutique packed Upper Town to the ‘Southgate’ shopping development which boasts over 55 high street brands.
