Coundon is a small rural village meaning "cows' hill". An area with a long history of coal mining which dates back almost 700 years, the village lies east of the A688 road between Bowes and Durham. It's also just a short distance from the busy market town of Bishop Auckland, which has a host of impressive landmarks and a wide range of amenities

Approximately a mile away from Bishops Green is the busy market town of Bishop Auckland, which has an array of shopping facilities, including independent boutiques as well as a retail park. There's also a range of supermarkets available for weekly shopping trips.
You'll be spoilt for choice for things to do living at Bishops Green as there's a wide variety of things to do in the local area. Bishop Auckland has a number of historic buildings and landmarks such as the beautiful Auckland castle and town hall. There are plenty of places to eat and drink in and around the town as well as plenty of places to enjoy the fresh air and enjoy some exercise. There are also many well-known cycle routes around the area, including the scenic 17 mile Bishop Auckland/Brandon Loop cycle route.
There are a number of schools for all ages close to Bishops Green including a selection of pre-schools and primary schools. In Bishop Auckland there are three secondary schools - St John's, The Bishop Barrington and King James I Academy. Bishop Auckland College is also nearby and provides a good standard of higher education.
The town of Bishop Auckland is served by a local bus station and has a number of stops throughout the town. Bishop Auckland railway station also is close by and provides links to the rest of the UK. The nearest airport to the town is Durham Tees Valley Airport at just under 17 miles away.
There are numerous doctors and dentistry practices in the local area. Bishop Auckland also has its own NHS hospital, Bishop Auckland General Hospital.
