Sherburn in Elmet
Sherburn in Elmet, usually just called Sherburn, is in a great central location between Leeds, York, Doncaster and Hull. This means it’s well placed for commuters and for families looking for a new home that’s between city and country life. The location just off the A1(M) is great for business here too, with an industrial area that is separated from Sherburn by the A162, keeping the village feeling like a village. It’s an asset to Sherburn as it keeps the local facilities thriving and provides work opportunities close to home.
Sherburn is quite a large village and it’s got amenities to match. There’s a twice weekly market which helps to keep a cheerful village feel that brings everyone together. It’s held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. There are quite a few independent shops as well as a choice of main supermarkets.
Going to school
The village has two primary schools; Sherburn Hungate Primary School and Athelstan Primary School. It’s great that youngsters can go on to secondary school in the same village, at Sherburn High School. Flying the nest might make Leeds and York feel too close to home, but both cities have got excellent universities.
The A1(M) is the driving force through Yorkshire and is a great option for work or for getting out and about. The A63 is the main A route just south of Sherburn, connecting Leeds with Selby. It joins the motorway at Junction 42. You’ll have a train station close-by for easy trips into Leeds and York. The average journey time to York is 20 minutes. It takes just over an hour to travel by train into central Leeds as there’s not a direct service. Bus services through Sherburn are operated by Arriva. For flights, Leeds Bradford Airport is about 45 minutes away by car, it’s an easy route around the top of Leeds.
Entertainment and Leisure
With both Leeds and York close by, you’ve got plenty of choice if you want a taste of city life, from cinema and theatre to history and culture, and just for days out. Staying closer to home you’ve got the tranquillity of the RSPB Fairburn Ings Nature Reserve or the adrenalin of the Tiger Moth Experience at Sherburn’s own airfield, and for something for all the family, the Live for Today Adventure Centre at Hazlewood Castle is just 6 miles away. This is great biking country too, so whether you’ve got motorbike power or pedal power, you’ll be in great company.
