The town of Maidstone offers a range of excellent attractions and heritage sites as well as stunning countryside. The picturesque River Medway meanders its way through the centre of the town, linking it with Rochester and the Thames Estuary to the north. Maidstone is very family friendly, with 23 primary and 15 secondary schools, including some particularly sought-after institutions - Maidstone Grammar School, Oakwood Park Grammar School, Maidstone Grammar School for Girls and Invicta Grammar School. Higher and further educational courses can be found at Mid Kent College.
Living here means you’ll be able to enjoy relaxing boat trips along the peaceful River Medway, as well as walking or cycling in the North Downs, or a spot of golf at the award-winning Mote Park. There’s also Leeds Castle - an historic Norman stronghold, which features 500 acres of parkland, the rip-roaring treetop adventures of Go Ape, and a brilliant hedge maze - all perfect for a family day out. Maidstone Leisure Centre is ideal for keep fit fans, with an impressive five swimming pools, a two-storey state-of-the-art fitness suite, sports hall and children’s soft play area.
Maidstone’s attractive high street has a good number of shops, and from here you can easily access Fremlin Walk, a modern shopping centre, where you’ll find a huge choice of well-known high street brands. The Chequers is another spacious indoor shopping centre, and on the other side of the River Medway, you can find St Peter’s Wharf, known for its clothes, crafts and homeware shops. There’s also a thriving local market which takes place at Lockmeadow, on Tuesdays and Saturdays each week.
Located in the heart of Kent, and halfway between London and Dover, Maidstone is in a fantastic location and is therefore a popular place to live for commuters. The town is just 2 miles from the M20 which connects south to Ashford and Folkestone and north-west to London, with the M25 approximately 18 miles away. The A229 provides a connecting route with the M2, and onwards to Canterbury and Margate.
Maidstone is well-served by trains and has two railway stations; Maidstone East for London/Ashford services and Maidstone West for Gatwick/Strood services. The Channel Tunnel is easily accessed by train directly from Ashford. For destinations further afield, London City, Gatwick and Heathrow airports have regular flights to and from other UK airports, as well as a wide range of international destinations.
