Newington C of E Primary School is situated in the village, just half a mile from the Watling Place development. Rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted, the school is said to have “very friendly and happy” pupils. Located in nearby villages are Hartlip Endowed C of E Primary School, Lower Halstow Primary School and Borden C of E Primary School, with the latter graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. For older children, Rainham Mark Grammar School and Borden Grammar School are both nearby.
Splashes Sports Centre in Rainham is 3.4 miles away from Watling Place and offers an indoor fun pool with wave machine and flume, as well as swimming lessons, a gym and fitness classes. More sports facilities can be found at Swallows Leisure Centre in Sittingbourne. Newington Recreation Ground is an open space just minutes from Watling Place, with a sports pavilion, a children’s play area and outdoor gym equipment for adults. Nearby outdoor attractions include Capstone Country Park, the Blue Flag beach at Minster and the artificial ski slope at Chatham Ski & Snowboard Centre.
Activities in Newington bring the community together, with a welcoming range of events organised by the Community Centre. The village also has its own WI, bingo and a social club. A Community Arts Festival is held in the village each summer, as well as the annual Newington Village Festival; both are great opportunities for families to have fun. A food and crafts fair is held in the Village Hall on the first Sunday of the month.
For daily essentials there’s a local Co-op just a few minute’s walk from Watling Place, and for larger grocery shops you’ll find a Sainsburys and Morrisons in Sittingbourne, and a Tesco Extra in Rainham. There is a good variety of shops in the neighbouring towns of Rainham, Sittingbourne and Maidstone, including the Fremlin Walk Shopping Centre and the Mall at Maidstone. For the ultimate shopping experience visit Bluewater shopping centre, approximately a 30 minute drive from Watling Place.
The village of Newington has regular bus services to Sittingbourne and Chatham, and its own train station. Situated on the Chatham Mainline, it offers direct services to London in just over an hour, and to Ashford in around 40 mins. The nearest major airports are Gatwick, Stansted and Heathrow.
