Schools

Skelmanthorpe is well served with local schools, with a choice of Skelmanthorpe First and Nursery School or St Aidan C o fE First School for younger pupils and nearby Shelley College for older children right up to sixth form. There are high schools in the nearby towns and cities; Wakefield Grammar School, Queen Elizabeth Junior and Senior Schools and Wakefield High School for Girls.

Shopping

There are a handful of shops, a post office and a Co-op in the village. For more choice, there's an abundance shopping within half an hour's drive; the Alhambra Shopping Centre in Barnsley, The Piazza and Kingsgate Shopping Centre in Huddersfield or the Ridings Shopping Centre in Wakefield. Leeds is also an excellent shopping destination with the Corn Exchange and White Rose Shopping Centre just two of the multitude of places worth a visit.

Leisure

Skelmanthorpe is home to one of the oldest brass bands in the country, which competes at a national level. Huddersfield Sports Centre is the nearest major facility, but you can keep fit at the nearby Bodyzone Fitness centre, or enjoy a round of golf at Silkstone or Woodsome Hall golf courses. Cannon Hall Country Park makes for a fun family day out, or you can take to the hills in the Peak District National Park. Kirklees Light Railway offers nostalgic memories for older visitors and Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends for the younger ones with over 3 miles of scenic track to explore.

Transport

Skelmanthorpe is centrally located within easy reach of many towns and cities, with Huddersfield just 9 miles, Wakefield 10 miles, Barnsley 12 miles, Leeds 20 miles and Sheffield 23 miles. The M1 and M62 are both also within easy reach for your daily commute. Trains from nearby Denby Dale station make the commuting easy, getting you into Huddersfield in just 25 minutes, and Sheffield and Leeds in under an hour. Domestic and international flights can be accessed at Leeds Bradford Airport, just 30 miles from the development.
