A driven site manager from Swansea who oversaw his first development aged just 22 has received two top prizes from Persimmon Homes – and with it a £2,000 bonus.
Highflier Ryan Sims was named Business Trainee of the Year and Young Achiever of the Year at Persimmon’s annual awards ceremony.
The Young Achiever Awards honour the best apprentices and trainees within Persimmon’s nationwide workforce.
Ryan, now 24, picked up his gongs – and the cash prizes – from Persimmon CEO Dave Jenkinson at the company’s York HQ last week.
“I’m chuffed to bits,” said Ryan. “Persimmon has been incredibly supportive with my training and progression and to win these awards is more than I expected.”
“It was great to be at the awards ceremony, to meet Dave Jenkinson and to see all of the other young people progressing through the company.”
“I am planning to invest the £2,000 into a property.”
Ryan joined Persimmon as trainee assistant site manager at the age of 16.
He has since achieved a BTEC, NVQ Level 3, an HNC and an HND in Construction Management and Technology, and a Batchelor of Science in Construction Management.
Ryan was promoted to assistant site manager in 2012 and took on his first site from the start of construction earlier this year, overseeing the building of 14 Charles Church executive homes in nine months.
The site, Glen Gardens in Bridgend, received 100 per cent positive feedback on the Home Builders Federation survey – and was nominated for a Quality Award from Premier Guarantee.
Rugby player Ryan said: “It wasn’t daunting taking on my first site from start to finish as I had already been with the company for a number of years and I felt prepared and ready.”
“My next site is going to be 127 units. It’s quite a leap, but I’m up for the challenge.”
“Looking forward, I’m planning to do my NVQ Level 7 and hope to move on to senior management and eventually contracts manager.”
“It’s a great time to be in the construction industry.”
Andy Edwards, managing director of Persimmon Homes West Wales, said: “I am thrilled for Ryan. He is a very deserving winner.”
“Ryan has shown remarkable determination and maturity to get to where he has by the age of 24. He has an extremely bright future ahead of him, and we’re proud to be supporting him on that journey.”
Ryan was one of more than 50 young people honoured at the awards ceremony.
Bricklayer Deri Jones (East Wales), who joined Persimmon from college, was named Trade Apprentice of the Year, while Marco Seminerio (Midlands) was runner-up.
Sales Trainee of the Year went to make-up artist turned house seller Samantha Meadon (South West), and Chloe Woolston (Thames Valley) came second.
Dionne Taylor, who helps with Persimmon PLC’s annual report, was runner-up in the Business Trainee of the Year category, while assistant quantity surveyor Liam Clarke (North Scotland) picked up the Duncan Davidson Award, which recognises those who have demonstrated entrepreneurial flair and spirit.
Runner-up in the Duncan Davidson Award was Sophie Kendall (East Midlands).
All award winners received £1,500, while runners-up pocketed £500. There were also £150 bonuses for all other finalists.
