New equipment for Barnsley Hospice thanks to housebuilder donation

Barnsley Hospice has received a donation towards new specialist equipment to aid patients’ comfort.

Persimmon Homes South Yorkshire awarded Barnsley Hospice with £815 through its Community Champions scheme. The donation will help to fund specialist turning equipment to support patients who are immobile, by gently automatically moving them at regular intervals.

Janet O’Hara from Barnsley Hospice said: “The Toto Lateral Turning System is unique piece of equipment which is extremely beneficial for our patients. The inflatable platform gently changes the position of the patient, this helps to prevent pressure ulcers and improve comfort.

“Persimmon Homes’ donation will enable us to purchase our second turning system. In addition, the funding of the Toto will also help maintain the health and safety of our team.”

Barnsley Hospice provides compassionate, high-quality care for anyone in the borough with a progressive life-limiting illness. The charity receives a £1.6m grant from the NHS, but needs to raise a further £2m every year, through voluntary donations, to fund patient care and support for families.

The Persimmon Homes Community Champions initiative seeks to support grassroots groups and charities in areas where the company is building. Persimmon Homes Yorkshire makes two donations of up to £1,000 every month to worthy causes.

Richard Hosie, director in charge of Persimmon Homes South Yorkshire, said: “Barnsley Hospice provide a vital service to the community during such difficult times. We are delighted to help support their work.”
