Eight carpenters from Persimmon Homes gave up their time to help build a stunning new base for a surfing charity as part of the BBC’s hugely popular DIY SOS show.
The Chippies from Persimmon Homes East Wales got stuck in to help Nick Knowles and DIY SOS: The Big Build team renovate Surfability UK’s base in Caswell Bay, Swansea.
Surfability UK supports disabled people who want to surf, helping more than 500 people a year take to the waves. The team transformed a run down, disused bus shelter often flooded, with no electricity, running water or ventilation, into a dry, well designed wet suit and surfboard storage unit. They also built an attractive Surf Centre, providing much-needed space to offer surfing opportunities to disabled people across the UK. The makeover will feature on a special broadcast for BBC Children In Need in November this year.
Martin Smith, managing director of Persimmon Homes East Wales, said: “We were delighted to help with this fantastic project. I think we’ve all seen DIY SOS over the 20 years it’s been on and have witnessed the fantastic work they do. It was a really exciting project for our carpenters to be involved in. Obviously the Covid-19 precautions made the project more difficult, but I was really impressed with the way everyone worked together. Surfability is a brilliant cause which helps disabled people enjoy the thrill of surfing. This new base will make a tremendous difference.”
Surfability's director Ben Clifford said: "Every little detail of the building is just perfect and amazing to see the amount of work and love that has gone into it. The people cared about what they were doing, and that comes through when you look at it.”
Persimmon Homes is currently selling stunning new-build properties right across South Wales, including in Cardiff, Barry and Blackwood.
