A young bricklayer from Norwich has been named the UK’s top trade apprentice.
Keane Squires, who works at the White Rose Park development in the city, received the award from his employers, Persimmon Anglia.
The 19-year-old beat off competition from apprentices from across England, Scotland and Wales to take the title and was presented with a trophy and certificate by regional chairman Paul Hurst.
Keane was nominated by his manager, apprenticeship master Darren Cooper, who said: “Keane has shown a rarely-seen natural ability, skill and passion for bricklaying. He is committed to delivering a quality build for customers and is highly respected on site due to his confidence and attention to detail.
“Such is his professionalism, he has already participated in a number of skills competitions, and was named Apprentice of the Year this summer by East Coast College.
“Keane thoroughly deserves the Persimmon Trade Apprentice of the Year award, as he has overcome some personal learning barriers to succeed in his chosen career. He is really motivated to learn – even taking on extra sessions to master skills in ceramic tiling, plastering and decorating.”
The talented youngster is now working towards his Level 3 Bricklaying qualification.
Keane added: “I really appreciate all of the instruction I get from my college and the Persimmon site management, and I am honoured to receive this award. My aim is to keep learning and become better at everything I do.”
Also recognised by the Persimmon Homes Anglia regional management team for their commitment to learning and development were sales trainee Charley Peak, based at the Bluebell Meadow development, and customer care trainee Charleigh Hall who works at the regional head office in Norwich.
Director in charge John Eldridge said: “As a company we are committed to developing the skills of our employees to deliver the best quality service to our customers. We are very proud of the progress each of these trainees has made since joining the business and look forward to helping them build long and successful careers with Persimmon Homes.”
Persimmon Anglia operates new homes developments across Norfolk.
