Situated south-west of Middlesbrough, Acklam is a popular and sought-after suburb of the city, with everything in place to provide a wonderful base for families and first time buyers. Just 3 miles from the city centre and its many shops and attractions, Acklam has the close-knit feel of a village community with a good range of schools and plenty of lovely green spaces nearby – making it easy to strike a perfect work/life balance. The suburb also has plenty of history behind it. It was first mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086 as ‘Aclun’, believed to be Anglo-Saxon for ‘place at the oak clearing’, and has several historic buildings including the old blacksmith’s and Acklam Hall, Middlesbrough’s only Grade I listed building.

Great local amenities

You’ll find everything you need for day-to-day living on Acklam Road, the long route that stretches through the suburb. With a Tesco Express, Spar, butchers, bakery, post office, fish bar and several more shops and pubs, you’ll be able to find all your essentials a few minutes from home. For a wider range of shops, hop on the bus to Middlesbrough to enjoy the shopping area, home to a selection of independent stores, high street names and luxury brands, plus lots of bars and eateries. Or, 10 minutes from Acklam, you’ll find Teesside Shopping Park, a sprawling retail centre with a wide range of supermarkets and clothing brands.

Choice of schools nearby

Families with children of all ages are well-catered for in Acklam, with local schools including Acklam Whin Primary School, Green Lane Primary Academy and Kader Academy for younger children, while secondary age pupils can attend Outwood Academy Acklam or Acklam Grange School. All of the schools are well-regarded, with all those without Academy status being rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted.

Get out and about

Despite its proximity to the city, there are plenty of opportunities to explore green spaces in and around Acklam, whether you prefer a relaxing stroll or a sporting activity. The Avenue of Trees is a popular local attraction, a wide and attractive stretch of lawn lined with lime trees planted at the end of the 17th century, as well as beech trees and Scots pines. The area is a favourite among runners and walkers. Other pleasant spots include Acklam Meadow, and, a few minutes’ drive away, Stewart Park with its deer, highland cattle, llamas, goats and pets’ corner. Acklam is also home to a number of sports clubs, including Middlesbrough Rugby Club and Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Centre.

Stay connected

Ideally positioned for commuters, Acklam is located just off the A19, which will take you north to Middlesbrough in 10 minutes, east to the coast in 18 minutes, and south to York in an hour. The area is well connected by a us network, and for rail travel you’ll find three stations (Middlesbrough, Thornaby and James Cook Hospital, within 10 minutes of Acklam. For travel further afield, Teesside International Airport is just over 11 miles away.
