Barnstaple

This family-friendly town is at the gateway to North Devon’s Atlantic coast, making it a great setting for your new home. It’s got a market town feel, with plenty of high street shops, cafés, and restaurants. A new regeneration project has brought the historic waterfront right up to date and has given the town a new lease of life. The historic bridge over the River Taw is one of the town’s landmarks and strolling along the wharf and the riverside paths is something you can all enjoy.

Living here

Barnstaple is just the right size to make you feel at home. The town centre gives you the option of high street stores, little lanes with independent shops, the modern Green Lanes Shopping Centre, and last but not least the very popular traditional Pannier Market. There are some good edge of town retail parks too.

Getting around

The A361 – the North Devon Link Road - is the direct route to Barnstaple from the M5 motorway at Tiverton.  Much of it is dual carriageway so it’s a really good link. You can head southwest from Barnstaple along the Atlantic Highway which takes you into Cornwall. The A39 runs from the town, along the fringes of the Exmoor National Park, and the scenic coastal road takes you to the ever popular beaches. If you need to commute, you’ll be just over an hour’s drive from Taunton and Exeter. You can take a train from Barnstaple to Exeter if you prefer, there are frequent services, and it takes an hour and 15 mins. Bristol Airport is just under two hours’ drive away.

Going to School

There’s a good choice of primary schools in the town, two community colleges for secondary education, and just a few miles away, at West Buckland, there’s a well-known independent school.  Petroc College of Further and Higher Education has three campuses, two of which are on the outskirts of Barnstaple.

Enjoying yourself

Barnstaple’s location speaks for itself! There are some fantastic beaches nearby, especially for surfing. Saunton Sands, Croyde, Woolacombe and Westward Ho! are the hot spots. The beaches seem endless which explains why this is such a great area for family holidays. If sun, sea, and sand aren’t enough, Exmoor National Park is an easy drive inland for wide open spaces, gorgeous scenery and fantastic hiking.
