Berkeley

Surrounded by beautiful countryside, yet only 30 minutes from Bristol, the attractive town of Berkeley is ideal for finding a work-life balance, and is a fabulous place to raise a family. Sitting atop a hill in the Vale of Berkeley, overlooking the River Severn, the little town has an impressive history for its size. It was an important medieval market town; the magnificent Berkeley Castle dates back to the 11th century and is where Kind Edward II is thought to have been murdered, and the town was also the birthplace of Edward Jenner, creator of the smallpox vaccine. With nature on your doorstep, a close-knit community, ample amenities and great transport links, why not make this beautiful part of the country your new home.

Everything you need

The pretty town centre is home to all daily essentials including a newsagent, Co-op Food and a pharmacy, along with several independent shops and eateries.

For a wider choice of shops, the vibrant city of Bristol is a 30-minute drive away and, at 16.5 miles away, Gloucester and its bustling quayside are even closer.

Fun for all the family

There are plenty of attractions to explore in and around Berkeley. The castle is open to visitors and there’s a range of stunning walks though the scenic gardens and estate. The grounds are also home to the tropical Butterfly House, and nearby is Edward Jenner’s house which is now a fascinating museum. A short walk away, Cattle County Adventure Park is a fantastic day out for the whole family, with a range of play facilities and an outdoor adventure playground.

If you enjoy staying active, there are many beautiful walks and bike rides around the area, including to the nearby River Severn.

Schools for all ages

Berkeley Primary School can be found just on the outskirts of the town, and covers pre-school all the way up to year 6. Secondary school pupils can attend nearby Rednock School or Katherine Lady Berkeley’s school, both rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted. For further education, SGS Berkeley Green university technical college is just a few minutes outside the town, and the University of Gloucester is half an hour away.

Great transport links

Living in Berkeley means you'll be able to enjoy easy access to Stroud, Gloucester, Cheltenham and Bristol, where there are plenty of places to eat, drink, shop and relax. You will be close to both the A38 and the M5, the main north-south routes for this area. The nearest train station is Cam and Dursley, 6 miles away, and for travel further afield Bristol Airport is 45 minutes away.
