Persimmon Homes

Colchester successfully brings ancient and modern history together. It’s one of the key towns in Essex as well as being an army base, which has been its claim to fame since Roman times. It continues to enjoy a strategic position 50 miles northeast of London - with excellent road and rail links, 30 miles from Stansted Airport and 20 miles from the passenger ferry port of Harwich. The remains of the Roman walls and the castle are reminders of the past, and the stunning visual arts venue at Firstsite, keeps Colchester looking forward. A new home here has the best of both these cultural worlds as the setting for family and working life.

Transport networks

The A12 is the key route from Greater London and the M25, passing Chelmsford, Colchester, Ipswich and on through rural Suffolk to Lowestoft. The other main route here is the A120, connecting Harwich on the east coast with Bishop’s Stortford and the M11 to the west. The M11 is the motorway link between London and Cambridge. Colchester’s train station is on the Great Eastern line, with services to London Liverpool Street taking an average of one hour, to Harwich taking half a hour, and to Ipswich taking around 20 minutes. First Essex and Arriva Colchester operate the town’s bus services, with the bus station located on the southern edge of town.

Town centre

Colchester’s town centre is embraced by the remains of its Roman Wall. Within its boundaries you’ll find great shopping, great places to eat and great places to visit, all within a few minutes’ walk of each other. Independent shops, department stores and high street brands are spread through the historic South Lanes and Trinity Street, and in the modern shopping arcades, including the Lion Walk Shopping Centre which is also the venue for Colchester’s weekly Friday and Saturday market. History and culture share the town’s green spaces, with Colchester Castle and Castle Park leading down to the banks of the River Colne and the Visual Arts Facility, Firstsite, in a central location just off the High Street. Colchester Leisure World is close to the heart of the town too, with activities to keep all the family happy.

Out of town

Essex and Suffolk meet in the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. What a great border to share. South and east of Colchester you’ve got the family-friendly seaside towns of West Mersea, Clacton-on-Sea, Frinton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze. Southwest of the town, Colchester Zoo makes a great day out
