The city, the most central in the UK, also benefits from a wide range of entertainment, schooling and shopping options, meaning there is something for everyone. The Cathedral Quarter in the city centre is a unique quality shopping destination and boasts an assortment of independent shops as well as stunning arts and cultural venues. It’s also a foodie heaven, with its abundance of stores and market traders specialising in all sorts of fresh and local produce. In the evenings you can sample the thriving nightlife with a host of bars, pubs, nightclubs and restaurants to suit everyone’s tastes. There’s always something exciting happening in Derby, and the city has a fantastic range of festivals all year round. Some of the top attractions include Derby Festé, Derby Film Festival, Derby Folk Festival and the very popular annual winter CAMRA Beer Festival.

Education for all

Derby is an ideal location for families - there are no less than 15 state secondary schools in Derby, along with a wide selection of primary schools and nurseries. Outside the state sector, there are three fee-paying independent schools. Derby Grammar School was founded in 1994 and continues the work and traditions of the former Derby School, which closed in 1989 and was one of the oldest schools in England. Derby High School is girls-only for senior and sixth form and mixed at primary level. The University of Derby has its main campus on Kedleston Road and has a range of undergraduate and post-graduate courses.

Get out and about

In and around Derby there are plenty of opportunities to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the outdoors. You could take a stroll through the River Gardens in the city centre, enjoy the craft village, boating lake and gardens at Markeaton Park, or enjoy the sounds of nature at Darley Abbey Park and Nature Reserve. For truly stunning surroundings, travel the 18-mile journey to enter into the Peak District National Park, home to breath-taking vistas and charming villages.
