Ebbw Vale

Ebbw Vale has the Welsh Valleys spreading out below it towards Cardiff, and the wide-open space of the dramatic Brecon Beacons high up above it. There’s no more steel and mining here these days, but it’s still an important link with the busy industrial areas of South Wales, that spread along the M4 corridor. The town has been re-branded and regenerated and a new home here is part of its ongoing plans, part of its community, and part of the heritage of the Valleys. With the city of Cardiff to the south, the countryside of the National Park to the north, Ebbw Vale makes sure you’ve got a good work-life balance.

On the go

Give or take a couple of miles, Ebbw Vale is halfway between the market town of Abergavenny, 12 miles to the east, and the industrial town of Merthyr Tydfil, 10 miles to the west. The A465 Heads of the Valleys Road is the link between the two. The A4046 winds its way due south through the Valleys, towards Cardiff, though the main routes from Abergavenny and Merthyr Tydfil, the A4042 and A470, are the usual commuter routes. Cardiff is 32 miles away, just under an hour’s commute. Trains from Ebbw Vale Town station and Ebbw Vale Parkway take you to Cardiff Central in about an hour. For business and pleasure, Cardiff Airport is 40 miles away, taking just over an hour to drive.

Living in Ebbw Vale

There’s a range of local shops here, with a Tesco Superstore and a Morrisons as your back-up. For sport and leisure, there’s the West Monmouthshire Golf Club, rugby and cricket clubs, and the Ebbw Vale Sports Centre. For education, the town has a great choice of primary and infant schools. There are two secondary schools for older pupils, Ebbw Fawr Learning Community School and Brynmawr Foundation School. Coleg Gwent has a campus in Ebbw Vale for further education options. The local hospital, Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan, is just out of town, serving the Blaenau Gwent area.

Heading for the hills

With a national park on your doorstep, the great outdoors is a wonderful resource for all the family, and a great contrast to the city life options of Cardiff. Whether for walking, cycling, challenging yourself to the highest peak - Pen y Fan – or just a drive to take in the stunning scenery, the Brecon Beacons offers all this.
