Lakenheath

Lakenheath has two important neighbours – RAF Lakenheath and the Thetford Forest Park. The Air Base is very much part of life here and it has made Lakenheath one of Suffolk’s thriving and well-served villages. The Thetford Forest is a fabulous local asset for families to enjoy – with endless trails to explore on foot or by bike – it’s the largest pine forest in Britain! Historic Bury St Edmunds and the cathedral city of Ely are the nearest places for a wide range of shops and services. They are the focal points for the area and lovely places to visit simply for a day out and a change of scenery. Suffolk is a mostly rural county and having the A10 and A11 nearby put a range of towns and the cities of Cambridge and Norwich within easy reach if you need to travel for work.

Bury St Edmunds and Ely

Bury St Edmunds is at the heart of Suffolk and Ely is just over the border in East Cambridgeshire. Bury is about 16 miles away and Ely is 14 miles away. Both these lovely places have history, excellent shopping, great places to eat out and a wide range of family entertainment to choose from.

Exploring the forest

The Thetford Forest Park covers an incredible 47,000 acres. It’s managed by Forestry England and the Woodland Trust and there are different areas to explore, such as the Green Walk at Great Hockham. The High Lodge Forest Centre is a good starting point, with a café, shop, Go Ape tree top trail and bike hire.

Further afield

Lakenheath has the advantage of being close to both the A10 and the A11. The A14 is just a little further to the south. These routes connect you with Norwich, Cambridge, Kings Lynn, Ipswich and Felixstowe. There is a local train station just outside Lakenheath but for mainline train services you have Cambridge and for services on the Ely to Ipswich line, as well as to Cambridge and Peterborough, you have Bury St Edmunds.
