Langport

Langport is a small and attractive Somerset Levels town with much going for it. It’s got a lovely community atmosphere, a little high street of independent shops and cafés, and excellent riverside walks. It’s small enough to feel off the beaten track, but well connected enough to be within easy reach of Taunton, Bridgewater, Yeovil, the M5 and the A303. Langport ticks all the boxes as the setting for your new home whether you are bringing up a family, working in the area, or taking a peaceful step back.

Living here

The centre of the town has a little shopping parade, a high street with independent shops, including La Fleur, a lovely homes and interiors shop for treats for your new home, and a beautiful park by the river. At one end of the town there’s a Tesco Metro and at the other, close to the historic bridge and overlooking the river, there are some inspiring local businesses; Kitchen at the Wharf, a popular café which incorporates workspace for local businesses, meetings and events, and the Shakespeare Glass & Arts artisan workshop and gallery. There’s a GP surgery, a sports & social club, a cricket club, and an ESSO garage. Everything is within walking distance.

Going to school

The local schools are really well supported. Young children can go to the Huish Episcopi Primary School and there are other options in the nearby villages. For secondary education Huish Episcopi Academy and sixth form is highly regarded. For something a bit different the Drayton Forest School is part of the Central Somerset Outdoor Learning Partnership.

Getting out and about

The town is the meeting point for two of the area’s key A routes. It’s on the A378 which joins the A358 for Taunton and the M5, and the A372 which links with the A303 to the east at Podimore, and with Bridgewater to the northwest. You can join the M5 at Bridgwater too. The three main towns for business and commerce in this part of Somerset, Taunton, Bridgewater, and Yeovil, can be reached by car in about half an hour. These towns all have mainline train stations, as does Crewkerne. First Buses Somerset provide 8 routes from Langport. Bristol is your nearest international airport, 30 miles to the north. It takes about an hour to drive there.

Things to do

The town’s great asset is the River Parrett. You can walk for miles along the riverbanks on the Parrett Trail, taking in the ancient ruins of Muchelney Abbey just outside the town and getting a feel for the unique Somerset Levels. There’s a much-loved seasonal river boat for family trips, The Duchess of Cocklemoor and it’s a great river for kayaks. Taunton, Bridgewater, and Yeovil offer the best options for rainy days with cinema, Super Bowl, and leisure centres. For a bit of history and definitely some colour, Glastonbury is just up the road, and Wells with its cathedral and wonderful market is a great place to have a wander.
