Lydney

Lydney is a lovely small town in a lovely location. It sits between the River Severn and the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Gloucestershire’s great landmarks. It’s only 20 miles from the historic city of Gloucester and the M5, and 9 miles from Chepstow and the Severn Bridge crossing. A new home here puts Bristol, South Wales, Gloucester, the Midlands, and the Cotswolds within easy reach for work and pleasure.

Getting around

Lydney is right on the A48 between Chepstow and Gloucester.  At Chepstow it joins the M48 and the M4 for the short stretch into Bristol, or into South Wales via Newport. Cross-country routes take you to Monmouth and the A40 which is in incredible route from Ross-on-Wye all the way into Wales and across the Brecon Beacons. Lydney has the convenience of a train station on the Newport to Gloucester line, with trains to Gloucester taking a scenic 20 minutes. Bristol is the nearest international airport, taking about an hour to drive there. Stagecoach West 23 bus route goes through Lydney, with buses to Gloucester taking about an hour.

Going to school

This family-friendly town has some lovely local schools amongst its amenities. Lydney C of E Community School, Severnbanks Primary School and, just outside town, Aylburton C of E Primary School are where your primary age children will make their friends. The Dean Academy is a mixed secondary school to move on to.

Going shopping

Lydney has got a great range of local shops to choose from, and there’s a Tesco Superstore as well as a smaller Tesco convenience store and a Co-op. It’s easy to pop into Gloucester for high street shopping, or down to Chepstow. If you want to combine a shopping trip with eating out, and leisure, the Gloucester Quays outlet is on the Lydney side of town.

Day tripping

You’ll have a head start for outings as the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Forest of Dean, and the historic ruined abbey at Tintern, are literally on the doorstep. Gloucester and Cheltenham are great for a day out, and from there you can cut across the M5 and head into the Cotswolds for a taste of iconic country life. For big city life you can choose between Cardiff and Bristol.
