Persimmon Homes

Who doesn’t want to live by the sea? Scarborough has got all the appeal of a much-loved, traditional seaside town. It’s a great place to bring up a family or to take a step back from the world of work. Two fabulous beaches, a harbour, a stunning headland with a castle, no-one will want to go to work. However, it’s also very well connected to Hull, York, Leeds, Stockton-on-Tees, and Darlington, as we know that life’s not always just a beach.

Being practical

Scarborough is the largest resort on the Yorkshire coast and so its amenities have made sure they keep up with the needs of its residents and visitors alike. It’s still a working fishing town and the harbour is home to a fish market with a shop, as well as stalls where you can choose from the fresh catch.  The town centre is home to many of the national chain stores as well as plenty of independent shops. The Brunswick Shopping Centre is a convenient central place to aim for.  The national supermarkets are dotted around the town – Sainsbury’s, Tesco, ALDI - along with several other convenience stores. The Seamer Road Retail Park on the A64, completes the shopping list.

Getting around

The main roads connecting the town with the rest of Yorkshire are the A170, A171, A64 and A165. The A1(M) is the nearest motorway. It’s 54 miles away, but the connecting routes are straightforward. The A64 is the main route to York, taking about an hour and half to drive. Catching a train is a good option, with services from TransPennine Express, Northern, and East Midlands Railway. To compare with driving, the train to York takes around 50 minutes.

Out of town

Of course, Scarborough is all about the sea, but there may be times when you want to head for the hills. Scarborough is right on the edge of the North Riding Forest Park and the North York Moors National Park. Further inland, the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is between Scarborough and York.

Out of season

You can feel reassured that there’s plenty going on in the town all year round. The burst of activity in the summer holidays is great for the economy but living here all year round has plenty to keep everyone entertained. The Hollywood Plaza Cinema has a weekly programme of blockbusters and newly released films, the Scarborough Sports Village is a state-of-the-art facility with two pools, an outdoor 3G football pitch and fitness activities to suit all ages, and children will love visiting the Sea Life Centre, especially Penguin Island – an unforgettable walk-through experience.
