Persimmon Homes

Wombwell is one of a group of residential towns that surround Barnsley in South Yorkshire. There are plenty of local facilities and services in the town, Barnsley is just 5 miles away and the M1 ensures easy access to Rotherham and Sheffield too. This is a good central family base in a key area for business and industry. The M1 is the major route keeping everything on the move from Leeds all the way down to London. Junction 36 is less than 5 miles away so it’s a great asset for work and leisure trips. Away from the busy life of Barnsley, Wombwell has the calm and tranquillity of the RSPB Dearne Valley – Old Moor site on the doorstep. A bit further away, but within easy reach for a day out of town, the Peak District National Park is the area’s much-loved landmark offering open space, pretty villages, reservoirs and nature reserves to explore.

Transport options

Wombwell is on the A6195 which joins the M1 at Tankersley. To the north, the A635 is the connecting route between Barnsley, Doncaster and the A1(M). By car, it usually takes around 15 minutes to drive into Barnsley, 20 minutes to Rotherham and just over 30 minutes to Sheffield. Catching the train from the town is a good alternative, with regular services throughout the day and evening. The nearest international airports are Robin Hood Airport at Doncaster, 16 miles away, and Leeds/Bradford Airport, 26 miles away.

Living here

Hometown facilities include primary schools and a popular secondary school – Netherwood Academy. There are sports clubs, parks, a range of local shops for day-to-day essentials including a useful Tesco Express, several takeaways to choose from, a library and a theatre. For high street brands, Barnsley is on hand with its thriving pedestrianised shopping area, independent shops, places to eat and markets in the revamped town square.

Out and about

As well as the local RSPB reserve for a family outing, Westwood Country Park and Wharncliffe Wood are lovely places to visit on the way to the Peak District National Park’s Broomhead Reservoir. The delightfully named hamlet of Wigtwizzle leads up to the open moorland beyond.
