The historic town of Shrewsbury was first established by the Saxons and, as the host of beautiful timber-frame buildings indicate, shaped mostly by the Tudors. With its 660 listed buildings, charming medieval streets, an abbey, a cathedral and a red sandstone castle, Shrewsbury is steeped in a rich heritage – and the best thing is, it’s still around today for you to appreciate.
The town centre is nestled in a loop of the River Severn so you’ll be able to enjoy the many pretty riverside walks, a riverboat trip or a visit to the Theatre Severn on the bankside. Shrewsbury also has a famous former resident… Charles Darwin was born in the town and went to Shrewsbury School. This is celebrated by the Darwin Trail around town which passes the Quantum Leap sculpture on the riverbank created to mark Darwin’s 200th birthday. Other must-sees in the town are Shrewsbury Abbey, which was built in 1083 and is still a place of worship today, and Shrewsbury Castle which is now home to the Shropshire Regimental Museum.
