West Calder
West Calder was once a settlement for the Romans, and in recent centuries a centre for the oil shale industry. The giant shale bings that dominate the West Lothian skyline are now a local landmark and scheduled monument called the Five Sisters.
Today it is a quiet village surrounded by countryside with excellent links to the commercial hubs of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Sitting between these two giants, the village of West Lothian has trains to Glasgow in as little as 42 minutes and Edinburgh in 23 minutes. The village itself has a collection of shops, newsagents, restaurants, take aways, small supermarket and a grade C listed pub, The Railway Inn. There are good schools, a medical centre, chemist and library as well as community gardens and woodland.
