West Calder

West Calder was once a settlement for the Romans, and in recent centuries a centre for the oil shale industry. The giant shale bings that dominate the West Lothian skyline are now a local landmark and scheduled monument called the Five Sisters.

Today it is a quiet village surrounded by countryside with excellent links to the commercial hubs of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Sitting between these two giants, the village of West Lothian has trains to Glasgow in as little as 42 minutes and Edinburgh in 23 minutes. The village itself has a collection of shops, newsagents, restaurants, take aways, small supermarket and a grade C listed pub, The Railway Inn. There are good schools, a medical centre, chemist and library as well as community gardens and woodland.

Living in West Calder

Great shopping and transport links

Your new house is part of a friendly community with a good sense of belonging. The High Street has plenty of independent shops, local businesses, cafés and restaurants. Livingston, just five miles away, has all the facilities of a larger town, with a choice of supermarkets, a shopping mall and the huge Livingston Designer Outlet - Scotland's largest outlet village.

Well connected with a beautiful outlook

Surrounded by green fields, and in the heart of Scotland, the area is well placed on the A71 route between Edinburgh and Glasgow. It’s a good alternative to the M8 a few miles to the north and from your new home, it takes just 23 minutes on the fastest train to Edinburgh and just under an hour to get to Glasgow.  For holiday or business travel, Edinburgh Airport is 15 miles away, taking just under half an hour by car.

Entertainment straight from your door

Your new build is perfectly placed to entertain the whole family. There's the Five Sisters Zoo, two indoor play centres - the Overboard Softplay Centre (the largest in West Lothian) and the Pitstop Softplay Centre. Grown-ups won’t feel left out – there’s a golf course on hand. If you'd like to go to the great outdoors, you’ve got the Harperrig Reservoir and East Cairns Hill, the Stoneyburn Medal Route which takes in views of the local landmark, The Five Sisters, and a bit further afield the Pentland Hills Regional Park. You're also close enough to both Edinburgh and Glasgow to enjoy day trips to the galleries, museums, theatres and lots of amazing restaurants.
