Southampton

Southampton is a port city with a strong seafaring tradition. It was the departure point for the Mayflower and the Titanic and it’s still the home of some of the largest cruise ships in the world. But the city has much more to recommend it than just its connection with the sea. Great transport links, plenty of activities and culture, a good range of schools and close proximity to a National Park makes it the perfect location for your new home.

Living in Southampton

Sun, sea and stunning countryside

The city is one of the warmest and sunniest in the UK, meaning you’ll want to spend plenty of time outside. With the sea to the south, you can explore the nearby beaches and coastal walks. Just half an hour away is the New Forest National Park, offering woodland walks and quaint towns and villages. Within the city, the Common covers 365 acres and features woodland, ponds, lakes and parkland. It often features large events like fairs, festivals and concerts.

Stay connected

Southampton is extremely well connected to the rest of the UK. The M3 offers a direct route to London and the M27 connects nearby cities like Portsmouth. Direct trains from Southampton Central station can take you to Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Winchester and Basingstoke, and London Waterloo is less than an hour and twenty minutes away. The Isle of Wight, located just off the coast to the south, can be reached by ferry in less than half an hour. The Airport, located just ten minutes by train from the city centre, flies to over fifteen national and international destinations.

A great range of schools and universities

There are 11 primary and secondary schools ranked as Outstanding by Ofsted in the city, covering both primary and secondary education. There are also two universities, with Southampton University recognised as one of the best in the UK. If you’re moving to the city with a family, you’ll have excellent choices for every stage of your children’s education.

If you’re a professional, you’ll be able to benefit from the wide range of CPD and short courses offered by the universities. And, if you have some free time, you can enjoy world-class learning on subjects such as art, history, English, philosophy and modern languages with evening and weekend classes.
