Caring for your windows and doors

It’s fair to say doors and windows play a key role in any home, from letting in natural light to keeping out annoying draughts that send energy bills spiralling. It’s why it pays to look after them.

Internal and fire doors

  • Changing flooring: If you replace tiles with carpet, doors may need trimming. This isn’t included and will need to be arranged by you.
  • Fire doors installed as standard: Three‑storey homes and apartments include fire doors to help slow the spread of fire and keep you safe.
  • Do not over‑trim fire doors: Fire doors must not be trimmed beyond manufacturer guidance, as this can affect their performance.
  • Ongoing maintenance: Fire doors need regular checks to ensure the self‑closing mechanism works properly and doors close fully.

Windows

  • Window care: Like all fittings, windows need occasional maintenance to keep them working well.
  • uPVC windows: Clean and maintain runners, handles and locks in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Timber windows: Finished with a breathable paint system designed to last up to four years.
  • Check sun‑exposed timber: If exposed to strong sunlight, inspect every few months for cracking or peeling.
  • Touch up when needed: Repaint or touch up timber areas to prevent long‑term damage.
