Are you ready for the move?

From collecting the keys to your first few days in your new home and beyond – we make the process as easy as possible. Here's how you can make your move simple and easy.

Declutter and organise

Before you exchange contracts, it’s a great time to get ahead by starting to declutter your home. It might seem early, but sorting through your belongings now can help take the pressure off later. You’ll be surprised how long it can take!

Start by tackling one room at a time and sorting items into ‘keep’, ‘donate’, ‘recycle’ or ‘bin’ piles. If you haven’t used something in the past year, do you really need to take it with you?

Once the decluttering is underway, begin collecting cardboard boxes, bubble wrap and tape. It’s also a smart time to start contacting removal companies for quotes, so you can compare prices and availability.

Pack using three simple categories

When the exchange is complete, apart from big furniture and appliances, start arranging your belongings into three categories:

1. Daily necessaries

These are items needed on the day of the move, such as toasters, kettles for much-needed cups of tea, towels and bed linen.

2. Important, but not urgent

This includes items such as TVs, computers and clothes.

3. Non-essential

Often fragile or sentimental in value, these items include ornaments, books, paintings and so on. It can be wise therefore to pack these well, mark the boxes and pack them last in your chosen transportation.

Time for the practical stuff

It's not all about packing boxes and picking out new furniture. Make sure you're taking care of admin, too.

Spread the word

Once you’ve agreed your moving date, it’s important to start notifying businesses, service providers and key contacts of your new address. The essentials include your bank, local council, HMRC, DVLA and your utility providers – gas, electricity, water, phone and internet.

Don’t forget to update your employer, any subscription services you use, your GP and dentist, and any relevant education providers like schools or universities. Arranging mail redirection through Royal Mail is a smart step too – it helps avoid missed letters and gives you peace of mind during the transition.

Arranging moving day

To make moving day easy, here are a few options to help lighten the load.

For a done-for-you service, search for removal companies in your area. Also, asking family and friends to help with the process can make it a memorable and cherished experience.

Remember to plan your move with plenty of time and be sure to arrange time off work if needed.

Your moving-day box

As part of your preparations, we recommend you put in a box all your essential items for the day. For example, mobile phones, tea, coffee, toiletries, cleaning cloths, and a handy takeaway menu (trust us, you’ll be too tired to cook!)

If you have children or pets, it may also be worth arranging for a relative to look after them during the move.

Collecting your keys

When the smile-inducing day has arrived and it’s time to pick up your keys, you'll be asked to sign a key release form that confirms their safe receipt. This will also cover your final meter readings and a complete check on the quality of your new home.
