Living in Edinburgh and the Lothians

Edinburgh and the Lothians’ counties

As well as the city and suburbs of Edinburgh, the region is divided into three counties: East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian. East and West Lothian have the shores of the Firth of Forth in common, while Midlothian has the high ground of the Pentland Hills Regional Park.

Edinburgh Castle commands the skyline as the region’s key landmark, with panoramic views over the Scottish capital. Also home to the largest equine sculptures in the world, the Falkirk Horses or ‘the Kelpies’, tower 30 metres above the Forth and Clyde Canal. The iconic Forth Bridges – the Forth Bridge, Forth Road Bridge and Queensferry Crossing – make a dramatic statement too.

It’s worth noting that West Lothian hosts the great motorway links between Edinburgh, Glasgow and Falkirk, and across the Forth from Queensferry to Dunfermline.

Legendary landscapes

Very much a part of the landscape, the Firth of Forth brings the waters of several Scottish rivers to the North Sea edge. On the horizon, south of Edinburgh, the stunning Pentland Hills can be seen to the east, and the coastline is a 40-mile seascape of beaches and harbours

Scottish city life and culture

As the capital, Edinburgh is the region’s centre, however, the main towns of Falkirk, Gorebridge, Linlithgow, Livingston and North Berwick are important business centres too.

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival tops the entertainment bill with an annual extravaganza of street theatre, music, dance and art. The Falkirk Wheel and the Falkirk Horses are a family day out for all ages, and there’s always a round of golf to be had in East Lothian.
