Living in Morpeth

Practicalities and pleasure

Morpeth is famous for its range of independent shops and restaurants, but it also covers all the practical things you’ll want within reach of your new home. Rutherford & Co is an institution. It’s an independent department store stocking everything from clothes and beauty products to homeware and gifts. You can also find a gin distillery, an artisanal chocolate shop, antique shops and a hardware store.

You can enjoy monthly farmers and street food markets, and an annual food and drink festival. You’ll also be spoilt for choice of places to eat. You can find Greek, Thai, Italian, Indian and Chinese cuisines represented, as well as a variety of cafes throughout the town.

A great community

Morpeth has plenty of opportunities to get out and meet people. The annual Picnic in the Park takes place every July and features music groups and community projects from the town. There’s also the annual Northumbrian Gathering that celebrates the region’s traditions over three days each year. There’s an annual book festival and regular screenings at the community cinema. If that wasn’t enough, there are plenty of clubs to get involved with, covering everything from rugby to bell ringing. With your new house, there will be plenty of opportunities to meet people, make friends and get involved in the community.

Outstanding schools

If you’re moving with children, there is a great range of schools serving all age groups. The primary Abbeyfields First School and the secondary The King Edward IV School are both rated as Outstanding by Ofsted. For further education, Northumberland College is based in Ashington, the next town along, and the region boasts two great universities, Newcastle University and Durham University.
