The M4 is the best option for travel between Bristol and London, South Wales and beyond. The motorway is the key route for North Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire, connecting these great areas of countryside with the towns and cities along their shared border. From Calne you can join the M4 at Junction 16 or Junction 17 depending on which direction you are taking. With the A350 motorway link and the A4 to Bath and Bristol, this area has great cross-country backup. Bath is 19 miles to the west, Chippenham is 6 miles away, Swindon is 16 miles to the northeast, Trowbridge is 16 miles to the southwest and Bristol is 35 miles to the west. Chippenham, Melksham and Pewsey are the nearest train stations. Trains into London Paddington from Pewsey take just over an hour. Local bus services add to the transport network, linking some of the other smaller market towns as well as Swindon and Bath. Bristol Airport is just under 40 miles away, for plenty of international destinations.
Staying local
Calne is a fabulous mix of new and old. It’s a lovely place to browse, meet with friends and show your visitors around, as well as having all the day-to-day shops that you’ll need. Calne Marketplace is filled with local businesses; there are supermarkets, convenience stores, gift shops, cafés and bistros. There’s a Post Office, the Calne Recreation Club, a football club and a bowls club. The pretty River Marden weaves through the town and sets the scene for the Castlefields Canal & River Park.
Further afield
Chippenham is the nearest larger shopping centre, where the Emery Gate Shopping Centre and Borough Parade will give you high street brands and places to eat out. However, with Bath and Marlborough approximately the same distance away, you’ll have all the ingredients for a wonderful day out there too. Bath speaks for itself, with history, fantastic shopping and places to eat. You can make the most of the city park & ride scheme to make life easier. Marlborough is a different experience. It’s a historic market town with a wide high street packed with boutiques and cafés.
