Living in Newport

Natural space

There’s a wealth of opportunities to get outdoors and stay active. Aqualate Mere National Nature Reserve sits just north of the town and is the largest natural lake in the region of the Midlands. The lake supports a diverse range of wildlife, including otters, polecats, bats and warblers. There are plenty of footpaths and walks to enjoy around the reserve.

A 14km greenway built on an old railway line runs between Stafford and Newport, providing traffic-free cycling, running and walking between the two towns. This is a useful direct route between these two places, as well as being a great way to exercise. What’s more, you’ll be surrounded by the Shropshire countryside, some of the best in the UK, so you can enjoy all the benefits that proximity to nature brings from your new Persimmon home.

Great schools

There is a great selection of schools. Moorfield Primary School, St Peter and St Paul Catholic Primary School and Lilleshall Primary School are all ranked outstanding by Ofsted, the highest ranking they can award. Newport Girls’ High School Academy is a secondary school also rated outstanding. For a town of its size, this is an excellent range of options for education. Plus, you have a good choice of further education in larger towns and cities surrounding the area. So, if you’re moving to the town with children, they’ll have excellent options for their education at any age.

A thriving town

Newport has a great high street with a mix of shops providing essential services, like a post office, pharmacies and supermarkets including Waitrose, as well as plenty of places to enjoy some retail therapy with antiques, designer fashion and arts and crafts shops to name just a few. You can also find lots of useful facilities in the town centre, including a library, swimming pool, youth hub and doctor’s surgeries.

Moving to a new town, it’s good to have opportunities to meet the community and make new connections. Throughout the year, there’s the Newport Show, one of Shropshire’s largest agricultural shows, Newport Carnival, which sees thousands of people attend and the Food Frenzy, a free, one-day food festival.
