Apprentice Brodie building on family tradition
08 October 2026
A new apprentice bricklayer is laying the foundations for a career in housebuilding after joining the Suffolk business.
Brodie, who lives near Sudbury, started on site at the five-star business’ Aldhurst View development in Leiston this summer , giving him valuable experience on site ahead of his official start this September.
The 16-year-old said his early start on site had given him an insight into the housebuilding process and the wide range of skills needed to build a new community.
He has seen first-hand how quality brickwork forms the foundation of every build, which sets the standard for the trades that follow and ensures we deliver all homes to the highest standards.
Brodie has now embarked on a bricklaying apprenticeship course at West Suffolk College, where he spends one day each week studying alongside fellow apprentices while continuing to gain practical experience on site.
The apprenticeship also continues a proud family tradition. Brodie's father Lee Read began his own career as a bricklayer and has since progressed through the business to become a valued Site Manager with the Suffolk region.
Brodie said: "I've really enjoyed my first few weeks on site and learning how everything comes together. It is hard work and a real team effort.
"The experience has shown me how important bricklayers are in the build process. If the brickwork is completed to a high standard, it makes it easier for everyone who follows and creates the quality finish that customers expect.”
Kelvin O’Dwyer-Heath, Head of Construction for Persimmon Homes Suffolk, said: "We are delighted to have welcomed Brodie to the team at Aldhurst View and to have local homes built by local people.
"As a five-star housebuilder, we are committed to delivering high-quality, energy-efficient homes for our customers while creating lasting legacies in the communities where we build. Developing talented young people through apprenticeships is a vital part of that commitment.
"Apprenticeships provide people with the opportunity to gain valuable skills, qualifications and hands-on experience while contributing to the delivery of much-needed new homes.
"It's particularly pleasing to see Brodie following in his father's footsteps and beginning his career with us. His enthusiasm to learn and willingness to gain experience across the site have already made a positive impression, and we look forward to supporting him throughout his apprenticeship journey."
Persimmon Homes is one of the UK's leading providers of construction apprenticeships, offering young people the opportunity to gain industry-recognised qualifications while building practical experience on live developments and helping create the skilled workforce needed to deliver the homes and communities of the future.
