Backing STEM Create CIC with £1,000 donation

14 September 2026

A community-based organisation that supports young people in education is celebrating after receiving a £1,000 donation.

STEM Create CIC received the donation from us after applying to our Community Champions scheme.

The Knottingley-based organisation works with young people to provide hands-on experiences outside of the classroom. This includes supporting young people into further study and careers in architecture, design and engineering, with a focus on engaging underrepresented groups.

Councillor Rachel Speak and Councillor Adele Hayes were recently on-hand for a cheque presentation to STEM Create CIC at our Glassworks development in Knottingley.

Mark Mills, Director of STEM Create CIC said: “We’re delighted to receive this support from Persimmon’s Community Champions scheme. The donation will help STEM Create give more young people the opportunity to get into a workshop, work with real tools and materials, and experience the satisfaction of designing and making something for themselves.

“We want to create practical STEM opportunities that feel exciting, purposeful and accessible, particularly for young people who may not always get these experiences elsewhere. Support from local businesses such as Persimmon helps us turn those ideas into something young people can actually take part in.”

Councillor Rachel Speak said: “It was lovely to hear about everything STEM Create CIC provides for our younger generation, helping them develop practical skills in science, technology, engineering and maths.

“I’m delighted they managed to secure this funding from Persimmon Homes to support their valuable work through our schools. We look forward to creating future opportunities.”

Sam Sowrey, Persimmon West Yorkshire Managing Director, said: “We’re so proud to support STEM Create CIC and the important work they do to help young people gain experience and develop their skills.

“At Persimmon, we want to help develop the next generation of talent who are wanting a career in construction and it’s a pleasure to work with STEM Create to do this.”
