Shopping opportunities in Wigan are vast, ranging from a weekly shop at one of the many supermarkets to a browse around the town’s two large shopping malls, The Grand Arcade and The Galleries, which both offer many high street stores and a choice of cafes and eateries. For a more extensive shopping experience, the cities of Manchester and Liverpool can be reached by road or rail within the hour, bringing with them an endless choice of shops, from independent boutiques to Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.
Sports and leisure for all
There are excellent sports and fitness facilities in Wigan, including local leisure centres, swimming pools and sports clubs. You’ll also find a variety of fitness, tennis and netball classes at local venues as well as golfing at Pennington and Haigh. For those of you who enjoy watching sport, there are several great local teams to support, including Wigan Warriors for rugby and Wigan Athletic for football.
Despite the town’s industrial roots, there’s a fantastic choice of parks and green spaces to explore. You could take a woodland walk through one of the many local woods, enjoy the wetland wildlife at Wigan Flashes Nature Reserve or follow the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath. A few minutes’ walk from the town centre is Mesnes Park where you’ll find attractive gardens, a pond, pavilion and play area, or make the short drive to Haigh Woodland Park, a great local facility offering walking trails, a high ropes course, adventure play zone and sprawling woodlands.
For something a little less energetic you could visit Wigan Little Theatre, a popular and intimate 230-seater venue, the fascinating Museum of Wigan Life or head out for dinner and drinks at one of the many restaurants and bars around the town.
Excellent transport links to Wigan by road, rail and air
One of Wigan’s biggest benefits is its accessibility to the surrounding cities and towns, with easy links to destinations far and wide. The motorway network is on the town’s doorstep, with the major cities Manchester and Liverpool within an hour's drive. Wigan is served by two train stations - Wigan Wallgate offering local links and Wigan North Western providing regular services to Manchester Airport, Liverpool, Glasgow and London.
International air travel is also easily accessible, with Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport both less than 45 minutes away.
