East Wales donation for Merthyr sports club

27 October 2025

The builder behind the Porth y Dyffryn development in Twynyrodyn has donated £1,000 to Thomastown Bowls Club.

Persimmon Homes East Wales presented the cheque to club representatives at their grounds in Merthyr Tydfil alongside the local councillors, John Thomas and Andrew Barry, as part of our Community Champions initiative.

The club, founded in 1918, currently plays in the Merthyr League, Mid Glamorgan League First Division, and Cardiff League First Division. The funds will assist the club in looking after the grounds after its ownership was transferred from the local authority a few years ago.

East Wales donates £48,000 to much-valued organisations and good causes across Wales each year as part of its Community Champions programme. Recent local recipients include Twynyrodyn Primary School PTFA, Merthyr Tennis Club, and Hope Pantry.

There are currently two to five-bed homes available for sale at Porth y Dyffryn from £214,995.

Victoria Williams – Persimmon Homes East Wales’ Sales Director – said:

“Bowls clubs like these are a great institution in any community – they provide people with the chance to play a sport they love, with all the benefits that come with it, but it’s a community in and of itself, where people can come together.

“Persimmon loves using its Community Champions programme to back organisations like Thomastown Bowls Club for all these reasons, and we hope that our Porth y Dyffryn site in Twynyrodyn will be homes for future generations of players and members at the club.”

Ken Davies – Chairman of Thomastown Lawn Bowls Club – added:

“I want to thank Persimmon for supporting our club with their donation today.

“Community sports clubs like ours take a lot of time, effort, and money to keep going and providing an enjoyable outlet for its players and fans, so support like this is very much appreciated, especially since the club took over ownership of the land grounds here.”

Cllr John Thomas – Merthyr Tydfil councillor for the Town ward – commented:

“I was delighted to hear Thomastown Bowls Club had been awarded a Community Champions grant as I know it will go a long way for them.

“I am particularly pleased with Persimmon with their backing for local clubs and charities as it shows a commitment to supporting the area and the people who make it such a wonderful community, so I would like to thank them once again for their donation.”

Cllr Andrew Barry – Merthyr Tydfil councillor for the Town ward – also said:

“On behalf of the Thomastown community, I want to thank Persimmon for their generous donation today. It is always heartening to see businesses support organisations like the Bowls Club so they can continue to do their great work.”
