Rugby Club ‘leading the way’ in women’s and girls’ sport celebrates after donation from housebuilder

A rugby club that is ‘leading the way’ in women’s and girls’ sport is celebrating after receiving a donation from Persimmon Homes.

Houghton Rugby Club, in Houghton-le-Spring, was given a £6,000 donation from the housebuilder after applying to its Community Champions scheme.

The club say the donation will go towards improving its clubhouse and facilities and will help with its work with the community.

Secretary of State for Education and Sunderland South MP Bridget Philipson was on-hand to present the cheque to the club.

Bridget Philipson MP said: “Houghton Rugby Club is a real asset to our area.

“With its commitment to promoting fitness, teamwork, and inclusion across all ages, the club is leading the way with its rapidly growing women’s and girls’ teams. 

“Grassroots sports clubs like this are vital in helping our community stay connected. I’m delighted that Persimmon Homes has recognised the fantastic work of the rugby club through this generous donation, which I’m certain will make a positive difference to the club.”

Craig Gill, Fundraising Manager of Houghton Rugby Club, said: “We are delighted to receive this £6,000 donation from Persimmon in support of our Big Build project.

“Their contribution will help us enhance our clubhouse and facilities to better serve our players and the wider community. We appreciate Persimmon’s commitment to supporting local sports and grassroots initiatives.”

“We’re delighted to be supporting the club in all the work they do and we hope this donation goes far in helping them to keep making a difference.”
