Somerset rugby club gym upgrade on the cards thanks to Persimmon donation

27 July 2026

Our Severn Valley region behind the new Tor View scheme in Castle Cary has donated £2,000 to the village’s rugby club, making a significant contribution to its fundraising efforts for a new gym.

It is the second time in two years that Persimmon Homes Severn Valley has supported Castle Cary RFC and were joined by local Somerset councillor, Henry Hobhouse, to mark the donation at the club’s grounds.

The club, established in 1888, has youth teams serving local children aged 4-16 as well as a senior side and is seeking funding from external sources for new gym equipment as much of those being used by its players are at the end of their life.

Persimmon’s Community Champions programme sees £700,000 donated each year to good causes and much-valued organisations across Britain. Recent local recipients include Caryford Community Hall, Toybox Preschool, the River Cam Flood App, and South West Children Hospice.

We have been building at the Tor View site off Station Road since the start of the year. Two-bed homes with a study are available at £320,000 with three-bed homes for sale from £325,000, and four-beds starting at £400,000. An equipped playground, public open space, and active travel routes, make up the vision for the site.

Persimmon Homes Severn Valley Sales Director Carly Spear said:

“We are very excited to have started work at Tor View, with our first plots now available for purchase in Castle Cary.

“As part of Persimmon’s commitment to leaving a positive and lasting legacy wherever we build, we heard the calls for assistance from our friends at the rugby club and were delighted we could help them out in their fundraising quest.

“I would encourage other businesses that can to help the club so they can get the equipment they need to continue being a community club loved by those in and around the village.

Greg Power, Chairman of Castle Cary RFC, added:

“We are so grateful to Persimmon for once again supporting us as a local sports club in Castle Cary, especially as we have a specific goal for our fundraising project that we are now nearer to accomplishing than before thanks to their donation.”

Cllr Henry Hobhouse, Somerset Councillor for Castle Cary, commented:

“I want to thank Persimmon for showing their commitment to the community of Castle Cary with their support for the rugby club, something we have already seen before with other donations in the area. It is important that businesses like theirs continue to help local organisations where they build and it’s a pleasure to see this in practice here.”
