This is one of Suffolk’s smallest towns, but it’s certainly not short on history, gorgeous old buildings and atmosphere, and it’s in a great location for Ipswich, Norwich, Bury St Edmunds, Diss and Thetford. Eye has its own range of local shops and services, including a primary and secondary school, and the weekly country market in the town hall is a focal point for the community as well as a great meeting place. A new home here enjoys the best of rural Suffolk but is definitely not off the beaten track.
Eye is just off the A140 Ipswich to Norwich road. It becomes the A14 at Needham Market before it gets to Ipswich. Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and Norwich are all about 20 miles away, making Eye a really convenient home base. From nearby Diss, on the Norfolk border, you can pick up the A1066 and the A143, though you’ll soon get to know the little cross-country routes that link with the main routes. From Diss you can also catch a train, making the most of the local services as well as the connection to London Liverpool Street, via Ipswich. The average journey time by train into Ipswich is 24 minutes, to Norwich it’s slightly less, and to Stowmarket, it’s just over 10 minutes. The local bus services are a good back-up too. Norwich International Airport is about an hour’s drive away.
Getting the shopping
All the essential shops are on your doorstep including a Co-op, and for a wider range, the market town of Diss is just 5 miles away. There you’ll find a Tesco Superstore, an M & S Simply Food, an ALDI and a Morrisons. For city-center retail therapy, you can choose between the larger facilities of Ipswich and the independent shops in the medieval centre of Norwich.
Going to school
Living here gives your children the opportunity to go to the local schools. St Peter and St Paul is the primary school and Hartismere School is the secondary school. Hartismere College is the sixth form facility for the secondary school.
You’ve got Suffolk and Norfolk to explore from Eye. Ipswich, Norwich and Bury St Edmonds will give you cinema, theatre, family entertainment venues and nights out. Southwold, Thorpeness, Aldeburgh and Orford will give the family a day out by the sea. The Thetford Forest Park and the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Natural Beauty will give you unspoilt countryside, though just setting off cross-country to explore will uncover picture-postcard villages, country pubs and fabulous walks.
