Sudbury is a market town in south Suffolk. It’s close to the border with Essex, making it a great base for both counties. You’ve got the best of both worlds here, a rural home county and a hometown that’s just 60 miles from London.
This is still very much a market town, with twice-weekly markets in the town centre as the focal point for day-to-day life. Today’s Sudbury is well-balanced with a strong pride in its history, and there are all the amenities and facilities you would expect in a good-sized town. The River Stour is the local landmark, and families can enjoy the water meadows and riverside parks.
Out and about, it’s easy to explore some of Suffolk’s wonderful and ancient villages. Lavenham and Long Melford are great examples. Just a walk in the countryside is a pleasure as you can so quickly feel that you are right off the beaten track in a landscape made famous by the painters, Constable and Gainsborough.
Sudbury is about midway between Ipswich and the M11, with the A131 passing through it and the A134 above it, on their north-south route between Bury St Edmunds and Braintree. Colchester, Cambridge and Bishop’s Stortford are within reach for commuters. Sudbury has a train station too – the last stop on the Gainsborough Line which is a branch of the Great Eastern Main Line. London Stansted Airport is just over 30 miles away.
In the town
In addition to a really good range of local shops and services, Sudbury has a Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and an ALDI for the weekly supermarket shop. Don’t forget the market – held every Thursday and Saturday – the heart of the town, at the heart of the town! Pubs, cafes and restaurants, parks and sports venues, make sure that there’s every opportunity to make the most of your leisure time.
For your children
Sudbury has a secondary school, Ormiston Sudbury Academy, and several primary schools to choose from. There are sports clubs for all ages, and a swimming pool and soft play area in the Kingfisher Leisure Centre. Friars Meadow, along the banks of the river, is a lovely open space for everyone to let off steam.
