Basingstoke

Basingstoke is Hampshire’s largest town. It’s an important commercial and business base just off the M3 motorway and just an hour and a half from central London. The great thing about Basingstoke is that it’s as easy to get into the city as it is into the countryside that surrounds it.

This part of Hampshire, along with its neighbour Surrey, is dotted with pretty villages and blessed with rural landscapes. Whilst Basingstoke will give you all you need in terms of shopping centres, leisure and entertainment venues, schools and services, the North Wessex Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Surrey Hills and the South Downs National Park will give you space to relax.

This is an active and modern place to live, with work and leisure opportunities, a fast train link to London and a fast-paced way of life. The Festival Place shopping centre is the main focus for retail and restaurants, and as the town has grown, it’s made sure that there are plenty of green spaces to enjoy.

Living in Basingstoke

Trade and transport

Transport is the key for a large town which has attracted some large businesses and is the UK headquarters for many of them. The M3 passes along the south-eastern edge of the town, linking London with Southampton, via Winchester. Just outside Basingstoke, you can peel off the motorway onto the A303 – the main non-motorway road route to the South West. The South West Main Line runs through the centre of Basingstoke, with direct services to London Waterloo taking under an hour.

Town and country

Where the town gives you Festival Place for shopping, a multi-screen Vue cinema and an indoor sky-diving centre, the countryside around it gives you a fabulous farm shop at Odiham, the beautiful market town of Arlesford, the lakes, woodland and heaths at Frensham, and the walking trails of the North Wessex Downs and the Surrey Hills.

Time for school

Basingstoke has at least one primary school for each residential area, there are several secondary schools on sites across the town, two further education colleges, a sixth form college and a Technology College. With sports and leisure centres in town too, children of all ages will have plenty to keep them occupied.
