First affordable homes complete at Hakewill Mews
23 December 2025
Families in Mid Suffolk who have been on the council’s housing waiting list are preparing to move into their new homes before Christmas.
The Suffolk team handed over three homes for affordable rent to housing partner Orbit Homes.
We are building 59 new homes at the development in Thurston, including homes for below-market rent and shared ownership.
With the first three homes now complete, the remaining affordable homes are to be built over the next six months, ready for the final handovers next summer.
Cllr Richard Winch, Mid Suffolk District Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Property, had a tour of the new homes to see the high-quality properties being offered to those in housing need.
He said:
“I’m really pleased to see the quality of the new affordable homes built by Persimmon Homes. Good quality affordable housing is vital for our communities.”
Kelvin O’Dwyer-Heath, Head of Construction, said:
“Persimmon Homes has a proud record of delivering five-star homes for the local community and we are delighted to be supporting those most in need here in Mid Suffolk.
“In addition to the affordable homes here, we have also offered a Local Homes Guarantee, ensuring those with strong local connections have priority when buying on the open market. We have seen a third of homes sold privately go to first-time buyers, and 60% of buyers were previously living within a 10-mile radius of the village.”
Brian Nearney, Chief Development Officer at Orbit, said:
“We are delighted to be working in partnership with Persimmon at Hakewill Mews to deliver a range of quality, modern homes in a mix of affordable tenures that support the local housing need in Thurston.
“Hakewill Mews is one of several developments we’re currently delivering alongside Persimmon in the East, continuing our shared commitment and investment to bringing much-needed new affordable homes to the region.”
