Stunning parks
Hackworth Park is a large park close to the centre of the town. There’s a play area and playground, a skatepark, a bowls club, tennis courts and playing fields. You can also find a network of footpaths running through the park. You can find plenty of other paths and trails that will help you take advantage of the countryside surrounding the town. For example, a ‘Locomotion & Historic Shildon’ trail links locations that have played an important role in the town’s locomotive past. From your new Persimmon house, you’ll be able to enjoy the parks and open spaces that the town has to offer.
Railway town
Trains play an important role in the town’s history. A pub where the first journeys started could even be classified as the site of the world’s first train station, as tickets were sold at the bar. Now, the town still benefits from a train station offering direct links to Bishop Auckland, Middlesbrough and Darlington. This is invaluable for the town, making commuting straightforward and allowing you to benefit from the shops and facilities of these larger towns.
In respect of its heritage, there’s also a free railway museum, Locomotion. There you can see old locomotives and trains, visit old railway buildings and workshops to see what they would have looked like, and exhibitions exploring the area’s history. A popular attraction, the museum attracts many visitors to the town, and it will provide plenty of excellent days out from your new house.
A close community
Jubilee Fields Community Centre provides a range of activities and services, including sports, social clubs, playgroups and craft clubs. Shildon Alive is an organisation that runs a shop with produce donated from local supermarkets on a ‘take what you need, pay what you can’ basis. It also provides activities for children in the school holidays and help and advice for residents. Sunnydale Leisure Centre, located in the centre of town, has a well-stocked gym, a 3G pitch, an athletics track and a wide range of groups, clubs and classes.
