Transport connections

One thing that makes Houghton le Spring’s such a great location is how close it is to a range of large towns and cities, and how easy it is to travel to them. Sunderland and Durham are both around thirty minutes away by public transport or twenty minutes by car, and Newcastle is just a thirty-minute drive. The town is well served by a good bus service that connects directly with Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham, as well as surrounding villages and smaller towns. The nearest train station is in Chester-le-Street, fifteen minutes away, which has services to Newcastle and Liverpool. 

Road connections are excellent, with the A1 just minutes away, offering a direct connection to the North and South of England. The A690 runs directly through the town, linking Durham and Newcastle. If you need to commute for work, drop the children off at school or travel to see family and friends, Houghton le Street makes it easy to get around the region and the rest of the country.

Amenities

The high street has a good range of practical shops, including supermarkets and greengrocers, banks, pharmacies and a choice of cafes and restaurants. The Galleries shopping centre is just fifteen minutes away and has over 120 high-street and independent shops. You can find large supermarkets and a huge choice of diverse stores, as well as leisure facilities including bowling, bingo and a leisure centre. 

The town also has a library, which has recently undergone a renovation, a primary medical centre and GP surgery, and a great range of schools for children of all ages in the town and surrounding area. The Houghton Sports and Wellness Centre has a gym, swimming pool and sports courts that are open to local residents. And for anything more, with the town’s excellent location, you’ll have a choice of cities and towns within easy reach of your new Persimmon home.

Surrounded by green space

Despite being within easy reach of several large towns, Houghton le Spring benefits from lots of green space. As well as the popular Kirklea Park within the town, Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve is within easy reach. Here you can find over 200 species of birds and a network of paths and tracks, as well as facilities including a cafe, visitor’s centre and toilets. To the north of the town is Herrington Country Park, one of the largest parks in the area, which has many walks and cycling trails, as well as an adventure play area, a model boating lake and a sculpture trail. All this nearby natural space will make getting outside and staying active easy for you and your family and will provide endless great days out from your new home.
