Apprentices attend Merthyr careers fair as region starts on new development
13 July 2023

East and West Wales regions attended a Careers Fair in Merthyr to speak with students about their future.
Three apprentices from Persimmon Homes were at Merthyr Tydfil College, selling the construction industry to the next generation of housebuilders.
The region recently secured planning permission for a new site in Twynyrodyn, Merthyr. The site off Elm Tree Grove will deliver 121 quality new homes for local people, and will include a mix of homes from one to five-bed properties.
As part of the commitment to the area, Persimmon’s Jake Mouncher (Apprentice Master), Leila Haslam, and Ethan Seymour (both working towards Level 3 qualifications) represented the business at the event engaging with around 300 year-seven pupils from Cyfarthfa High School as well as year-six students from cluster primary schools.
We used the event as a chance to promote our innovative Training Academy, which is run in partnership with Bridgend College in Llanidid, near Pontyclun. The Academy, recently visited by the Welsh Economy Minister, takes on apprentices to teach them new skills, which translates into hundreds of new homes being built across South Wales every year.
We pride ourselves on our homes being priced 20 per cent below the national average, opening the opportunity of homeownership to thousands of families every year who might otherwise not be able to afford it.
We employs over 5,000 people directly and supports over 80,000 jobs in the supply chain, and our long-established Community Champions programme sees over £50,000 spent on good causes in Wales each year.
Persimmon’s Regional Build Quality Director Carl Davey said:
“It’s really important to Persimmon that we support such events as we aim to promote the housebuilding sector to the next generation of construction workers.
“Having our apprentices at the event is not just a way for pupils to engage directly with the workers of today and learn about what they do and how they entered their trade, but it also gives the apprentices themselves a chance to be in a more public-facing, interactive role, further adding to their skills.
“We are very proud of our roots in the South Wales Valleys, and with our new site in Twynyrodyn coming on-line shortly we will be creating local jobs both on-site and within the supply chain as we build the best value homes in sustainable and inclusive communities, and contribute to the area’s ongoing economic regeneration.
“As a business, we aren’t just about building homes but communities too. We’re pleased to be working in partnership with Careers Wales to engage with local schools in Merthyr and help attract children into productive and reliable professions that you’ll find in the construction industry.”
