‘Exceptional’ primary academy scheme progresses
14 January 2026
Persimmon Homes Severn Valley is proud to report significant progress on the construction of Airfield Primary Academy, a flagship new school forming part of our Haywood Village development in Weston-super-Mare.
The facility will open in September 2026, providing modern education and community amenities for local families. Built on the site of the former Weston Airfield, the school will feature:
- 21 classrooms and a 103-place nursery
- A community hub with grass sports pitches, an artificial turf pitch, multi-use games area, changing facilities, and studio spaces
- Sustainable design with solar panels and air-source heat pumps
Airfield Primary Academy is being delivered by Persimmon Homes and Willmott Dixon, working to specifications set by North Somerset Council and the Cabot Learning Federation. This project reflects our commitment to creating thriving communities supported by high-quality infrastructure.
The school is a key element of the wider Haywood Village scheme, which will deliver 2,500 new homes alongside community facilities. It will provide much-needed school places and sports amenities right on the doorstep of our growing development.
Applications for reception-aged pupils starting in September 2026 must be submitted to North Somerset Council by 15 January 2026.
While construction is progressing well, proposals for temporary classroom provision have been submitted to ensure pupils can start learning in 2026 should the main building not be ready for the start of term.
Claire Burton, Managing Director, Persimmon Homes Severn Valley:
“Persimmon is very pleased to see progress on the Haywood Village development, particularly the delivery of this key element of community infrastructure. This will be the second school we deliver as part of our scheme for the new community, complementing the existing facilities in Haywood Village and further supporting the growing needs of local families at the development. We’re pleased to contribute to the evolving educational landscape in Weston-super-Mare and look forward to seeing Airfield Primary Academy become a central part of the community as we continue to build quality new homes for local families.”
Craig Jones, Principal Designate, Airfield Primary Academy:
“The Cabot Learning Federation is immensely proud to see the new Airfield Primary School taking shape – this will be a fantastic school with exceptional facilities. Preparations for a September opening are progressing smoothly, and we are excited to welcome our first pupils to this excellent new school.”
Cllr Catherine Gibbons, Deputy Leader of North Somerset Council:
“North Somerset is committed to providing local schools for local children, so it’s fantastic to see the new Airfield Primary Academy taking shape. The new school is a great example of how the council can work with academy trusts and developers to meet the needs of local residents.”
Richard David, Director, Willmott Dixon:
“Working in collaboration with North Somerset Council and Persimmon Homes on the construction of Airfield Primary Academy exemplifies our shared commitment to excellence. We are delighted to be working once again with North Somerset Council on a project which pushes the boundaries of sustainable education.”
